Most Impressive Touran of All Time

  • Volkswagen brings third crossover model to market with CrossTouran
  • CrossTouran starts with six engines; power range from 102 PS to 170 PS
  • Only van in world with TSI engines, dual clutch transmission (DSG) and park steering assist (Park Assist)

Volkswagen is extending its line-up of distinctive Cross Models, effective immediately, to include a third level: The CrossTouran. As on the successful CrossPolo and CrossGolf models introduced at the beginning of the year, the CrossTouran is also characterized by wrap-around, robust guard strips, powerful wheel arches, modified bumpers and newly designed 17-inch alloy wheels. Fitting into its powerful appearance is the chassis that was elevated by approx. twelve millimeters. Thanks to its roomy interior it comes highly recommended as an ideal companion for uncomplicated transport of mountain bikes, hang gliders, or any kind of sporting equipment. Aside from all of its practical aspects, the new van with its individual outfit offers an alternative to all those who like things sportier and earthier.

Precisely this also applies to the interior of the CrossTouran. There are new fabrics, materials and colors here, like the fresh and spunky “Orange”, exclusively designed for the new Cross Model. In combination with its standard highly variable and ergonomic interior, up to seven seats, up to 1,989 liters of cargo volume andup to 39 different storage compartments, the new CrossTouran can be recommended as a vehicle that offers loads of fun, while offering the capability of taking on nearly any conceivable challenge.

The CrossTouran is driven by economical four-cylinder engines. They output between 75 kW / 102 PS and 125 kW / 170 PS in power. Highlights among the gasoline engines are the direct-injecting TSI engines; turbocharger plus supercharger plus downsizing all lead here to a ratio of performance, torque and fuel economy that is unique worldwide. Both CrossTouran TSIs are, in spite of their significantly higher power, more economical than the 102 PS version. Especially interesting is a look at the 170 PS TSI, which is shifted by a standard high-end DSG automatic transmission: At 7.8 liters per 100 kilometers, the 206 km/h fast CrossTouran TSI betters the fuel consumption of the already economical base model by 0.5 liters per 100 kilometers.

Just as powerful as they are economical are the three TDIs for the new CrossTouran. They all have standard diesel particulate filter, consume between 6.2 and 7.0 liters fuel per 100 kilometers, and – like the two TSI versions – they can be paired with the innovative DSG dual clutch transmission.

Design and dimensions

In front, the new CrossTouran is identified by its “Matte chrome” insignia radiator grille, partially black headlamp housings, black guard strips, and a bumper redesigned especially in its lower area with standard fog lamps. Distinctive: Black grained trim covers in the spoiler area, similar to those found on SUVs.

On its sides the CrossTouran is also identified by black body trim around the doors, rocker panels and fenders. The accent strips on the doors, as well as the sill panels and wheel arches, all made of high-quality plastic, offer effective protection against parking damage and give the CrossTouran its robust design characteristics. Like the add-on parts, the door handles are also sporty black. Also mounted on black brackets is the standard roof rail made of silver anodized metal.

In the rear area, the CrossTouran has been refined by taillights with dark lamp bodies (“Smoke” visual effect) and a robust bumper design that fits in with the overall vehicle concept with its wrap-around black trim. Integrated there on the right and left: The rear reflectors.

Chassis

A look at the rear end of the CrossTouran makes it especially clear just how impressive and powerful the van’s stance is on the street. This is where the effect of the fenders, and the larger track widths with increases of 16 millimeters in front and 34 in the rear really come into play. Also impressive and solid are the large tires of the individualized van: On the rear axle the size 235/45 R 17 tires provide for optimal road surface grip, and the front axle transmits its driving force to tires sized 215/50 R 17. Specially developed for the CrossTouran are 17-inch “Funplay” type alloy wheels (front 6 ½ J, rear 8 J). As already mentioned, modified spring-damping tuning also increases ground clearance by approx. twelve millimeters.

Park Assist

A technological highlight of the model series that is unique worldwide, and is included on the CrossTouran too, is the optional “Park Assist” park steering assist (including “Park Pilot” distance warning system front and rear, and “Hill Hold Control” hill ascent assist). “Park Assist” enables nearly automatic parking. The intuitively operated system is activated by the push of a button. This function button is located in front of the gearshift lever.

At speeds up to 30 km/h and at a distance of 0.5 to 1.5 meters from other parked cars, if requested an ultrasonic sensor system will sense parking spaces parallel to the roadway on the left or right while driving past, and a control module computes the ideal parking path. “Park Assist” informs the driver of the start position for parking in the multifunctional display, which lies in the direct visual field of the driver. Then the driver shifts into reverse gear.

Now the instruction “Steering control active! Check your surroundings!” appears in the display. During the entire parking process, all the driver needs to do is press the gas pedal, clutch and brakes; the Touran handles the steering. In this case, as soon as the standard “Park Pilot” feature in the rear (distance warning system) switches over to a continuous signal, this means that the optimal distance to the next vehicle has been reached (approx. 20 centimeters). If the vehicle speed is too great or if the driver intervenes and moves the steering wheel the Park Assist function is momentarily deactivated. After shifting to reverse gear, the entire parking process generally lasts only 15 seconds.
