Lexus’ first luxury hybrid sedan, the GS450h, made its motor racing debut in Japan’s only 24-hour race on 15 July. The high-performance hybrid shone at the Tokachi International Speedway in Hokkaido, outperforming many of its traditional petrol rivals. The GS450h placed 17 in a field of 33 at the conclusion of the two day international event.
The entry of the GS450h allowed Lexus engineers to obtain extensive technological feedback on the vehicle. The performance of the hybrid system in a motorsport environment was also closely analysed, with engineers studying feedback to see how they could make the hybrid systems smaller, lighter and more efficient for future hybrid motorsport development.
This race was the first time an automobile manufacturer has entered a hybrid vehicle in a competition that has semi-international status. Previously, only private teams with self-owned hybrid vehicles have competed in independent events at racing circuits in Japan.
“The GS450h is truly a remarkable performance vehicle,” said Scott Grant divisional manager, Lexus Australia. “To be able to demonstrate its amazing torque and power on an international race circuit is a great opportunity for Lexus. Our hybrid outperforms many performance petrol engines, so the race track is a natural place for the GS450h to excel.”
The Tokachi 24-hour Race – first run in 1991 – is recognised as one of the signature endurance racing series in Japan. The competition is between mass-produced vehicles, divided into five vehicle classes, depending on technical specifications. This is the first time a Lexus hybrid has competed in the Tokachi Series.
