Toyota Australia today revealed its new generation Camry at a spectacular event at its Altona manufacturing plant.
The line-off event is a Toyota tradition for manufacturing employees to celebrate the launch of the new car, which is the only four-cylinder car built in Australia. More than 2000 employees were on hand for the event, along with Victorian Premier, the Hon. Steve Bracks; The Hon. De-anne Kelly, Parliamentary Secretary – Trade; Toyota Motor Corporation Executive Vice President, Mr Uchiyamada, and Camry Chief Engineer, Mr Fuse.
Toyota President and CEO, Mr Ted Okada, said the Camry manufacturing line off was the culmination of $450 million investment in the facilities and technologies by Toyota Australia.
“Toyota Australia is entering one of the most exciting periods in its history of manufacturing in this country. To make these cars, we had to revolutionise the Altona plant. Today, we have a plant that is unique by integrating many components of car making into a compact location. This makes us an effective and efficient manufacturing operation.
“I am confident that this is the best car ever built by Toyota in Australia,” Mr Okada said.
Victorian Premier, Mr Bracks said Victoria should be proud to host a car marking plant that plays a vital role in the success of local manufacturing.
“Toyota Australia’s role in the global launch of the new car showcases the company’s world-class manufacturing talents and confirms the State’s reputation as a centre for excellence in car manufacturing,” Mr Bracks said.
The 2006 launch of the new Camry sedan will be followed later in the year with the launch of the Australian built six-cylinder Aurion sedan.
