Debut in 2007 Jeep Grand Cherokee
- The 3.0-liter Turbo Common Rail Diesel (CRD) offers more power with impressive fuel economy
- Most advanced diesel technologies available
- First use of Piezo injection in a North American SUV
A new 3.0-liter turbo Common Rail Diesel (CRD) will debut in the 2007 Jeep® Grand Cherokee. With more torque than most eight-cylinder engines, equal acceleration and the fuel economy of a small six-cylinder gasoline engine, the Mercedes built 3.0-liter CRD is one of the most advanced powerplants available in the marketplace today. It is designed to be an efficient, smooth-running engine that gives customers up to 30 percent improved fuel economy without sacrificing performance.
The 3.0-liter CRD diesel produces 218 hp (160 kw) @ 3800 rpm and 376 lb-ft of torque (510 N•m) @ 2000 rpm. Built in Berlin, Germany, the new V-6 CRD engine is entering series production, combining all the current and leading technologies in diesel engine development. Enhancements have been made from the mechanical system and airflow dynamics to the electronic engine management and emissions control. This guarantees outstanding results in terms of output, torque characteristics, economy, exhaust emissions and refinement – 33 percent more power and 28 percent more torque than the 2.8-liter predecessor previously offered in Europe.
“The 3.0-liter CRD is an efficient, smooth-running, clean engine that delivers performance and fuel efficiency,” said Bob Lee, Vice President – Powertrain Product Team, Chrysler Group. “Advanced diesel technology has improved over the last several years; engines are quieter and cleaner due to electronic controls, higher fuel pressures and improved after-treatment systems.”
The new CRD 3.0-liter features:
- Six cylinders in a 72-degree V-arrangement
- Displacement - 2.985-liters
- Bore x stroke - 83 x 92 mm
- Compression ratio- 18:1
- Oil capacity - 9.5 liters
- Coolant capacity - 14 quarts
- Exhaust-gas recirculation with electrically controlled valve
- Aluminum crankcase with cast-in grey iron cylinder liners
- Third-generation common-rail injection with Piezo injectors
- Dual over head cam with four-valve technology and two camshafts per cylinder bank
- Variable geometry turbocharger, electrically controlled
- Electrically controlled intake air throttling
- Electromechanical swirl control
- Quick-start glow system
- 24,000-psi (1600 bar) fuel pressure
The common rail direct-injection system has been refined, achieving greater progress in fuel consumption, exhaust emissions and combustion noise. Newly developed Piezo injectors operate more rapidly than the previous solenoid injectors, ensuring a precisely metered fuel supply to the cylinders. Piezo injectors are controlled for load and engine speed. Five injections per power stroke are now possible at a peak pressure of up to 24,000 psi.
Electrically actuated intake-port swirl valves modifies the turbulence of the intake air as it enters the cylinders, optimizing the combustion process with the aim of further reducing fuel consumption and exhaust emissions. The new electronic control unit (ECU) manages all the engine functions – from the quick-start glow system and automatic start function to control of the high-pressure fuel pump.
The turbocharger, a Variable Geometry Turbine (VGT) with electrically adjustable blades, acts like a small turbocharger under launch conditions, but has the desirable characteristics of a larger turbocharger at higher engine speeds. The benefit to customers is enhanced response at low engine speeds.
Advanced diesel technology is part of DaimlerChrysler's advanced propulsion technology umbrella, which also includes exceptionally efficient gasoline engines, hybrids, flex-fuel and zero-emission fuel cell vehicles.
