GM's Displacement On Demand Fuel-Saving Technology
GM has trademarked Active Fuel Management™ as the name for its displacement on demand fuel-saving technology, beginning with the Vortec 5.3 V-8-equipped 2007 Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon. The name will be applied to all 2007 model year vehicles equipped with the technology.
Active Fuel Management™ is a fuel-saving technology that enables the engine to automatically and seamlessly operate on only half of the engine’s cylinders when full power is not needed, improving efficiency by as much as 12 percent in some vehicles. GM currently offers the fuel-saving technology in nine vehicle models – more than any other automaker.
“More than two million GM vehicles will utilize this technology by 2008,” said Brent Dewar, GM North America Vice President of Marketing and Advertising. “Active Fuel Management conveys the fuel economy and uncompromised performance benefits this incredible technology provides.”
The technology was introduced as displacement on demand in the 2005 model year Vortec 5300 V-8-equipped Chevrolet TrailBlazer EXT and GMC Envoy XL and Envoy XUV. It is available in the 2006 model year 5.3-liter V-8-equipped Buick Rainier; Chevrolet TrailBlazer, TrailBlazer EXT, Impala SS, Monte Carlo SS; GMC Envoy and Envoy XL; Pontiac Grand Prix GXP; and Saab 9-7X.
