Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has been awarded the Engineering Excellence Award for its high-performance Carrera GT sports car. The prize was awarded by the Society of Plastic Engineers (SPE), one of the most respected professional organizations in plastics technology, at the 34th Annual Innovation Awards in Livonia, Michigan. The Society substantiated having chosen the Carrera GT stating that Porsche "had impressively demonstrated the tremendous future for the use of plastics, not only in high-performance sports cars, but throughout the entire automotive industry".
With the Carrera GT, which is limited to 1,500 vehicles, the Stuttgart-based automotive manufacturer demonstrated the technical possibilities that exist today in vehicle construction. The Carrera also offers a glimpse of future Porsche technologies. The 612 HP high-performance sports car is produced in the Porsche plant in Leipzig. With an unladen weight of just 1,380 kg, the Carrera GT can rocket from 0 to 200 km/h in just 9.9 seconds.
