Constructional features
Five-door hatchback with a distinctive sporting character, elaborate suspension with rear-wheel drive, longest wheelbase in this segment, class-typical exterior dimensions. Drivetrain
Only vehicle in its class with a longitudinally mounted engine at the front and rear-wheel drive; initially featuring two four-cylinder petrol engines and two diesel engines; petrol engines with fully variable valve train; diesel engines with second-generation Common Rail Injection (1,600 bar). All engines feature EU 4 technology and convenient start function.

Engine variants:
BMW 116i with 85 kW (115 bhp); Double VANOS.
BMW 120i with 110 kW (150 bhp), Double VANOS and VALVETRONIC.

BMW 118d with 90 kW (122 bhp), VNT turbocharger with intercooler.
BMW 120d with 120 kW (163 bhp), VNT turbocharger with intercooler.

Six-speed manual gearbox (five-speed for the 116i)
or six-speed automatic transmission with Steptronic (for 120i and 120d).

Suspension and active safety
Remarkably high standard of driving dynamics, comfort and driving safety for the compact class. Aluminium double-joint tension-rod axle at the front, lightweight steel five-link rear suspension, Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with a driving dynamics mode (DTC), Automatic Stability Control (ASC), Electronic Differential Lock, Anti-lock Braking System (ABS), Dynamic Brake Control (DBC), Cornering Brake Control (CBC), Electronic Brake Force Distribution (EBD), best stopping power in the compact class.

Suspension
Five-door hatchback with steel body construction. Use of high-strength steel for weight reduction, longest wheel base in the compact class, wide track, extremely short body overhang at the front, five seats with three- pivot automatic seatbelts and three headrests on rear seats, variable luggage compartment with a 330 to1,150-litre capacity and high-opening rear lid, asymmetrically split folding back seats, double luggage compartment floor.

Passive safety
First compact class vehicle with two-stage brake lights. First vehicle in its segment with constant indication of brake pad wear, tyre defect indicator, tyres with emergency running characteristics, stiff body-in-white for precision driving and optimum safety in the event of a crash; high-strength side-on collision reinforcement struts with safety latches on all doors, maximum protection of occupants with two-stage activating front airbags, side airbags at the front, curtain head airbags for front and rear passengers, automatic belt tensioners and belt force limiters at the front, seat occupancy detection for front passenger seat; in the event of an accident, safety switch cuts off flow of current, switches off fuel pump, unlocks doors, switches on hazard warning lights and interior lights; Dynamic Stability Control DSC, DTC, ASC, ABS, DBC, CBC, EBD (see subheading "suspension") - best prerequisites for being awarded 5 stars in Euro NCAP crash test.

Standard equipment
Engine starting button with Convenient Start Function, ignition key without key bit and battery, with remote control function, vehicle has key recognition function and adjusts - amongst other things - radio*, air conditioning*, electrically adjustable seats* and mirrors according to key-owner's preferences; battery charge sensor ensures optimum starting, onboard computer, wear parts warning indicator, separate temperature control for driver and front-seat passenger.
