Wolfsburg. Volkswagen's Touareg claims to be the most advanced off-road vehicle of its era. This multi-purpose vehicle with permanent four-wheel drive (4XMOTION) is available as with a 5-cylinder TDI inline engine or as a V6, V8 or V10 TDI. All versions have a significant feature in common: an outstandingly high trailer load limit of 3,500 kg (braked, gradient up to 12 percent/1 in 8.3). This value makes every Touareg an ideal towing vehicle. In particular riders, sailplane pilots and boat owners are likely to make the Touareg their favourite car for safe, convenient transport of their valuable freight to the next show jumping arena, airfield or marina. This extremely high trailer load limit is explained in all cases by the high torque of the five-, six-, eight- and twelve-cylinder engines. Take for example the 5-cylinder inline TDI: this economical turbocharged direct-injection diesel (128 kW / 174 bhp) develops a maximum torque of 400 Nm in the Touareg, at the low engine speed of 2000 rpm. The well-equipped Touareg V6 (162 kW / 220 bhp ) has a maximum torque of 304 Nm, the sporty Touareg V8 (228 kW / 310 bhp ) develops no less than 410 Nm. And the Touareg V10 TDI (230 kW / 313 bhp) has the almost incredible peak torque of 750 Nm. However, it is not only the power reserves that shift the towed weight so supremely; it is rather the manner in which such loads can be towed safely. In addition to the standard 4XMOTION four-wheel drive, the Touareg's high-performance suspension also comes into its own. There is innovative double-wishbone suspension of different design at front and rear. For the Touareg V10 TDI this independent suspension is rounded off by standard CDC air suspension, including automatic self-levelling and electronic CDC (Continuous Damping Control); for all other models this system is available as optional extra. Both the steel-spring and air suspensions are a guarantee that Touareg drivers are not likely to be shipwrecked even when towing a heavy boat. There is also another novelty: as an optional extra, a version of the trailer hitch that can be retracted or extended at the touch of a button is available. How consistently Volkswagen has tackled the task of producing an ideal towing vehicle can be seen by its special offer to equestrian sport enthusiasts: as a joint project with trailer specialist Böckmann, an exclusive, highly practical horsebox has been developed for use with this off-road vehicle: the "Top Master Touareg Edition". This extremely spacious trailer, rated for a gross weight of 2.4 tons, features typical design elements on the sides to match the Touareg, and also alloy wheels as standard. From the technical point of view the basic structure with top-quality all-polyester body and anodised aluminium double-flange frame makes the "Top Touareg Master Edition" trailer a genuine premium product. Practicality and added value are guaranteed by solutions such as the large saddle compartment that can also be accessed from the outside. A hydraulic brake system (with advantages such as reduced braking distance) and "extra-comfort suspension damping" help to maintain the highest level of active safety. The long distances to be covered to the next tournament become considerably shorter thanks to this advanced suspension, which enables the trailer to be towed at up to 100 km/h.
