During our short test drive, not once did the car or driver feel like it was beyond its' capabilities. The natural tendency of the S4 to understeer has been reduced while exhibiting excellent balance front to rear allowing throttle steering. The owner assured he was not a professional driver, which would scare most passengers as we approached a hairpin turn at high speed. However, with some footwork and a downshift or two from the "flick your wrist", UUC short shifter, we turned into the bend with high efficiency and little drama from the tires. The KW coilovers have been adjusted three times to strike the needed compromise between comfort and performance. The Neuspeed rear sway bar allows some oversteer which helps tuck the nose into the corner.
The Quattro system teamed with approximately 330hp allows this car to run with BMW M5's and Mercedes-Benz E55's. Come poor weather it's no contest. Quattro has proven itself in all forms of motorsport and many times has been banned or weight penalized! They used to call it the "unfair advantage", because Quattro allowed legendary racers like Hans Stuck to put the power down to the ground and win many races. The S4 Avant can slingshot itself from corner to corner and brake with utter confidence.
The exterior shape is exotic with a sharp front splitter and a rear spoiler aiding aerodynamics. The aero improvements were developed for the high speed Autobahns of Germany that have been verified for improving stability especially in the rear. On the outside, the understated Negaro Blue paint is electrifying and the seamless Quattro ring graphics on the rear doors blend smoothly into the wheel wells. This look is reminiscent of the original UrQuattro of the early 80's and is perfectly suited for this stealthy hot rod.
The S4 Avant is an incredibly well rounded machine that inspires great confidence. Its ability to deliver instant traction while a powerful twin turbo V6 thrusts you forward, is always gratifying. This makes one wonder what an RS4 or even the new RS6 is like, with 450hp! After riding in this car, it will be hard to comprehend.
